Ensuring Nonprofit Integrity and Accountability Workshop

Co-sponsored by CAN, Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN), and the Center for Excellence in Nonprofits (CEN)

SVCN recommends all our agencies to attend this workshop. This workshop is intended for Executives, Finance Manager and Board Members on February 7th from 8:30 to 2pm. Successful nonprofits make integrity the centerpiece of their culture, practices and behaviors, because they know that a good reputation is a valuable asset. Join with your peers to learn how to implement practices to ensure positive public perception of your nonprofit, and discover why and how your board should participate in ensuring your nonprofit’s integrity. With the help of an accountability checklist, you’ll walk away from this workshop with a clear picture of your organization’s strengths and weaknesses, plus proven solutions for eliminating the weaknesses.

The workshop features Keynote Speaker Jerry Silva, Auditor for the City of San Jose. Mr. Silva, author of a city report on nonprofit reporting and grant oversight, will address nonprofit integrity through the eyes of government. To register for Ensuring Nonprofit Integrity and Accountability go to www.canonprofits.org for online registration. As a member of CAN, SVCN or CEN the rate for the event is only $40.

Data, Odds and Ends
Information provided by Supervisor Don Gage in his State of the County Address.

As the County begins our count of the homeless this week we are reminded; In December 2004, a countywide homeless census and survey was conducted and found that on a given night there were 7,646 homeless in our County and nearly 35 percent of those were chronically homeless. Of the 7,646 homeless, 58 percent receive no government assistance, 75 percent report having a disability of some kind, and 20 percent reported working full or part time. Permanent supportive housing for the homeless is both cost effective and logical. It costs taxpayers an estimated $61,000 annually to cover the cost of emergency room services and incarceration for one chronically homeless person. Our hospital emergency room has become the primary care provider for the uninsured; 62,000 patients visit annually, and many of them are homeless. Our hospital emergency room has become a night stay, a respite from the cold or rain for the unhoused. Yet it would cost only $16,000 per year to provide permanent supportive housing that included treatment and care for the same person.

The California food stamp program serves more than 2 million people annually. A recent study found that more than 50 percent of Americans between the ages of 20 and 65 will at some point receive food stamps.

City of San Jose

Exhibit F
SVCN is pleased to report to our nonprofit agencies impacted by Exhibit F that we are actively continuing to work on this issue on your behalf. We have held many meetings and discussions but we feel we need legal assistance in negotiating with the City of San Jose. Therefore, we have retained pro bono legal services from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati (WSGR) to represent SVCN in our negotiations with the City of San Jose. We are very grateful to this prestigious legal firm for their willingness to work with us on this contract issue and for helping us add value to our SVCN members.
