July News to Members

SVCN membership renewal process is underway. We hope you will renew your involvement and membership with us. For a copy of our invoice go to the membership page on our website www.svcn.org  Our voice is stronger with all of you involved.

Advocacy and Public Policy
SVCN was able to secure $1,288,551 on behalf of the Social Services and Immigration Programs. Nonprofits in the Probation Department had no cuts to community based JJCPA services through the restoration of over $280,000 in funding. Additionally, SVCN advocacy with the City of San Jose Healthy Neighborhood Venture Fund (HNVF) resulted in $ 385,000 in funding redistribution to existing HNVF agencies. Existing agencies were scheduled for a 28% cut in funding but through our advocacy the cut was reduced to 13%, 7 programs were brought up to a $25,000 minimum funding level, and 8 new programs were capped at $25,000. A 3% Cost of Living adjustment is now being passed to all nonprofit general fund contracts and this is over $1.2 million dollars annually.

SVCN believes these efforts are only accomplished when we all work together to benefit our nonprofit sector. This is particularly true for small and mid-sized organizations with budgets under $2 million, which comprise over 50% of our network.

State Legislative News and Information
California Association of Nonprofits (CAN) continues to monitor impacts to nonprofits at the state level. CAN is supporting the following bills Torrico’s Bill AB 839 to restore Casino Night fundraising, Lieber’s Bill AB1835 to increase the minimum wage. Liu’s Bill AB 2098 to develop electronic payment of state contracts and grants by 2008. CAN is requesting more information on AB 2704 which would establish the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives to learn more about how all nonprofits will be included in this initiative.

Programs and Workshops of Interest
CompassPoint’s 19th annual Nonprofit Day conference titled: In Every Community, There is Work to be done. In Every Heart, There is the Power to Act is on July 11, 2006 at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco. Including twenty-seven workshop sessions, this conference is a must-attend professional development day for nonprofit staff, boards and volunteers. It's also a perfect way to connect with the Bay Area nonprofit community. Full program and to register online: www.compasspoint.org/conferences

The Center for Excellence in Nonprofits presents: Weathering the Perfect Storm: Leadership and Renewal in the Nonprofit World on July 28, 2006 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at The Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos.

For nonprofit leaders, the competing imperatives of expectations, commitments, and everyday life can be exhausting and isolating. This is a compelling and timely opportunity for our Executive Directors and Board members to come together to engage with Dr. Linda Hawes Clever on how we can effectively address these challenges by sustaining and renewing our nonprofit colleagues and ourselves. CEN is pleased to offer 2 upcoming programs in July on Building Board Capacity and Board Self Assessment. To register for any (or all!) of these sessions, please visit www.cen.org

The new CompassPoint Workshop Catalog is out and all the new workshop dates are up on the website. For San Jose go to https://www.compasspoint.org/onevent/classes.php?sort=sj

A couple highlighted San Jose workshops coming up in the next 2 months are:
* Coaching Skills for Managers and Directors – 7/31/06
* Introduction to Fundraising Research – 8/2/06 and 8/22/06 – FREE, but registration is required (limited number of seats available in computer lab).

First 5 Commission- We wish Dr Maya Cruz well as she leaves the Commission. Supervisor Beall has appointed Sue Mayer from EMQ Children and Family Services on an Acting Basis until a formal appointment can be made to the Commission.

Social Services/Immigration-We thank the Board of Supervisors for their unanimous support of these programs funding add back. We also thank all the agencies for their phone calls and attendance at the many hearings to advocate for this funding.

City of San Jose-
Community Center Reuse Strategy- The Reuse Strategy has been delayed for one year. SVCN expects to continue to monitor this issue and our position remains that “the City cannot expect to salvage their fiscal difficulties at the expense of nonprofit providers. Our complete position is listed on the SVCN website. The Northside Community Center RFP will be revised for the 3rd time to include funding for maintenance and utilities. Contact PRNS for more information on this RFP.

HNVF- SVCN is monitoring the plans for Cycle 8. This will be a 2-year process. The Committee will met on August 16th at 4pm to finalize major portions of this RFQ. Some decisions were made at the last meeting, to cap new programs at $25K, no sunsetting, grant floor of 25K, SVCN has asked for reduction in paperwork for grants under $50K and to seek a new way to evaluate proposals. We are conducting a survey and if you have not logged on please do so by going to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=361302283990

Probation Providers- Probation agreed to meet with all contract agencies to discuss contract adjustments in services in lieu of COLA increases on their State grants. We continue to meet with them regarding changes in JJCPA programs. Our next meeting is July 11th.

Public Health
A SVCN team has met with Dr. Guadalupe Olivas and her Public Health managers. We are working with this department to learn more about the department's priorities and how we as nonprofit partners can help identify/match issues/initiatives that also fit into our interests. We will also learn more about the plan and implementation of a funded Pandemic Response program. For further information contact SVCN consultant Tom Kinoshita at TKinosh@aol.com.
