Reports From SVCN Executive Director
First 5 Commission- We continue to monitor and over the next few months we will meet with Commission members.

Social Services- We continue to advocate for the $1 million in one-time general funds to be restored again this year for general fund services, immigration and Status Offender Services. The hearing is May 17th at 6:30 pm if your agency is impacted by one time funding please join us. If you are not sure contact Narges at office@svcn.org

City of San Jose- SVCN advocacy resulted in a 12% cut instead of the administration proposal of 27%. We realize that for the 9 new programs this was a difficult decision; however SVCN works toward benefits that support the majority of nonprofits and for the 100 existing programs we were compelled to support a reduced cut level that supported the majority of our agencies. We will continue to monitor HNVF toward reduced paperwork, timeliness in their execution of contracts and in planning for the 2 year Cycle beginning next year.

Community Center Reuse Strategy- The hearing is May 16th at 7pm. We understand that this is a complex issue For more information go to http://www.sanjoseca.gov/clerk/Agenda/051606/051606a.pdf CFSV is planning to be lead advocate speaking on this issue. SVCN is participating with CFSV advocacy.

Probation Providers- Our advocacy has resulted in the restoration of $250K in cuts for nonprofits for the FY07 budget. SVCN data analysis showed nonprofit services have been cut over $1 million over the past 4 years while services inside Juvenile Hall and at the Ranch have increased well over $3 million. We will be working toward increased equity in our cost reimbursements, and funding for community based services.

Mental Health Services Act - If your agency is interested in becoming a MediCal eligible organization you might want to take a look at our position to the Mental Health Department on Access for new providers. For more information contact Dr. Mary Hiland at mary@hiland-assoc.com

Immigration Providers– SVCN completed a formal position which is posted on our website and will be part of our advocacy.

Legislation to Watch
Measure A- SVCN has proudly endorsed Measure A—for “health care, transportation and local accountability”—on the June 6th Santa Clara County ballot. Along with over 60 nonprofit organizations and numerous Chambers of Commerce. We encourage you to vote yes on Measure A which will provide local funds for local priorities In addition, SVCN is also sponsoring a Nonprofit Get out the Vote for Measure A precinct walk day on Saturday May 20th, 9am to 1:30pm. At 2051 Junction Ave, Suite 235, San Jose. If you can join us contact Shiloh at sballard@measurea.org

Minimum Wage- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing raising California’s minimum wage from the current hourly wage of $6.75 to $7.75. The California Association of Nonprofits has endorsed raising the minimum wage. The California Budget Project (CBP) Policy Points, outlines key facts about the minimum wage and it can be found at www.cbp.org

Monte Carlo Nights-Casino Nights- Texas Hold’ em. Currently the Attorney General has suspended all of these types of charitable fundraising events. Assemblymember Torrico’s bill AB839 – The Gambling Control Act would allow nonprofits to engage in this type of fundraising. CAN is supporting this legislation that would permit a nonprofit organization to conduct fundraisers using controlled games as a funding mechanism to further the purposes and mission of the nonprofit organization. If you organization is impacted by this type of event please contact CAN at www.canonprofits.org
