Mental Health Services Act Funding

The Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal will honor the top corporate givers for their good work in this community. The Business Journal will honor five nonprofit organizations that are making a significant difference in our community. These are groups chosen from among the community's foundations and service providers who are effectively using resources to make an impact in a particular field. For this first award cycle, we'll honor work in arts/culture, education, health/human services, finance and housing. Corporate Philanthropy and IMPACT awards evening on Tuesday, August 28. Craigslist Nonprofit Boot Camp
in Berkley on August 18th http://craigslistfoundation.org 

Budgeting and Financial Planning for Nonprofit Organizations on August 6th from 9:30-3:30.  Topics include assessing the organization's capacity, evaluating the current financial climate, developing financial goals, creating cost and income projections, planning for cash flow, presenting and approving a budget, implementing, monitoring, and revising the budget, board/staff roles and responsibilities, and scenario budgeting. www.compasspoint.org

The American Management Association (www.amanet.org) has a scholarship program this year for nonprofits that they started with the Leader to Leader Institute (Peter Drucker’s organization). They have quite a variety of trainings in everything from Management, Project Management, Time Management, Leadership, Finance, Interpersonal Skills, Communication, Supervisory Skills, Human Resources. SVCN NEWS AND UPDATES

SVCN membership campaign underway. We want to thank over 115 of our nonprofits for already sending in their dues. 27% of SVCN’s budget is supported by our members. If you have not yet renewed please do so. We also want to thank The Health Trust for a $20,000 grant, Sobrato Family Foundation for a two year grant for $15,000 each year with a COLA in the 2nd year.  

SVCN welcomes Clark Williams, Alette Lundeberg and Pam Kelly to our SVCN Board of Directors.

New or Interim Executive Directors and New Members of SVCN to meet on Wednesday September 19th from 9-10:30. This is a great time to learn about executive resources, network with colleagues and get acquainted with SVCN services to our members. Please plan on attending we will have representatives from CEN and CompassPoint as well.

General Membership Meeting will be on Wednesday September 26th from 9-10:30 am. We will be updating our members on our SVCN work for FY 07-08 regarding the County, City of San Jose, and local funding concerns such as United Way and Silicon Valley Community Foundation. SVCN is recommending that all our agencies post their organization information online at www.guidestar.org This national database allows donors, community, ,media and government funders to learn on line about your organization, your 990 form and more. Please put your guidestar link on your website.

City of San Jose

The City of San Jose
will be holding a series of meetings to discuss the changes in the HNVF grant process and priorities.  Peter Ellis and staff from Community Crime Prevention Associates will be the lead consultant working on this project. We encourage all current and potential grantees to attend these meeting TBA.

The cable channel in San Jose for Community Access is Launching.  SVCN has an appointment to this Board of Directors.  This is a great opportunity for a staff, client or volunteer who is interested in cable television.  Nonprofits will begin to have access to produce shows and use this media outlet to reach the community. The person must either live or work in San Jose. If you are interested please contact our office for an application and more information.

Executives and Nonprofits on the Move

Director of Senior Community Services. Elisa Koff Ginsborg who will soon be at Working Partnership USA. Jennifer Loving who will assume the role of interim Chief Executive Officer at EHC Lifebuillders. Chris Block, Olivia Mendiola and Hermelinda Sapien all have been elected to the ALF Board of Directors. Carilee Pang Chen from THRIVE in San Mateo County will be leaving to be with her children and there are a number of job openings including Executive Director check them out at www.thrivealliance.org  CEN has a Director of Marketing Job Opening check out at www.cen.org The  Health Trust saying goodbye to Gary Allen on August 1st from 5:30-7:30 at their new location at 2105 S. Bascom #220, Campbell.  and keep the Health Trust in mind if you are looking at hiring a company do your organizations financial management. 

The California Association of Nonprofits (CAN) just launched the California Nonprofits Career Center where nonprofits can make online employment connections: careercenter.canonprofits.org.  It offers employers targeted access to quality California nonprofit professionals, along with quick and easy job-posting.  Job-seeking professionals can make sure their resumes are being seen by those in the nonprofit sector who matter most to them.  Resume posting is free and confidential.  Job-seekers receive automated weekly e-mail notification of new job listings.
