As a Literacy Program Coordinator for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP), you will work with a cohort of 2nd and 3rd grade students who are struggling with literacy. You will provide targeted small-group instruction to help students develop their literacy skills and become proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade. You will build strong relationships with your students and their school day teachers. You will collaborate with parents and school staff to support the success of your students.
What will you do?
Provide targeted literacy instruction for 2nd and 3rd graders in groups of 4-6 students four days a week (Monday-Thursday, 2:30pm-6pm)
Conduct and analyze literacy assessments to observe student progress and inform instruction
Prepare detailed lessons designed to build literacy skills; differentiate instruction by group and by student to support a variety of reading levels and student learning needs
Observe students during the school day to modify learning plans; regularly meet and communicate with teachers about academic goals and plans
When possible, pull students for small group or one-on-one literacy instruction during the school day; support school day instruction in the classroom when appropriate
Communicate regularly with caregivers about instructional focus, student progress and areas for growth; provide strategies for supporting student learning at-home (workshops and resources)
Work with BGCP’s Program Strategy team to recruit, enroll, and group students
Collect, enter, and interpret data from Salesforce to help inform program design and track student progress
What qualifications will the ideal candidate have?
Passion for helping historically underserved students to succeed in school
Hold an asset-model view of students and their backgrounds (cf. deficit model)
2-3 years of experience working with elementary youth, preferably on a school campus in an instructional setting
Teaching or literacy tutoring experience preferred, especially with beginning readers and struggling learners
Highly skilled in organization, communication, and collaboration
A self-starter, who is intrinsically motivated, and enjoys problem solving
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Spanish fluency strongly preferred
