The power of the bike movement resides in the thousands of passionate people who ride bicycles. That’s why SVBC’s advocacy model is rooted in community organizing. We’re looking for people who have experience making policy change by bringing people together to advance a common cause. The ideal candidate would have experience in achieving advocacy wins by working with and through community members. This involves an understanding of the process and how to navigate it, connecting volunteers with relevant decision makers, being that conduit of information to a local agency and more.
SVBC advocacy staff is the liaison between public agencies and residents to help residents organize themselves and be successful in getting their elected officials to prioritize, fund, plan and build a transportation ecosystem that is resilient, healthy, affordable and sustainable.
More specifically, this role is tasked with building and supporting what SVBC calls “local teams.” These are groups of residents SVBC supports to get more involved in their community. Currently, SVBC’s San Mateo County local teams cover Redwood City, San Mateo, North San Mateo County, San Carlos/Belmont, Palo Alto, and we’re working to form a team in East Palo Alto. We also recognize that it may be hard to find someone who can do all this so please don’t be deterred if you’re strong on a few of these aspects and have room to learn in others.
