Job Description

ALF is seeking a creative, resourceful and ambitious Chief Operating Officer at an exciting time of organizational growth and development. With a new CEO and a veteran team, we’re looking for a creative COO to be a partner to that new leader. The COO reports directly to the CEO and shares responsibility with the CEO for operating a high-functioning, collaborative, extremely productive team to meet the organization’s strategy and vision.

The COO is also responsible for all CFO functions. But that’s just a third of the role. We’re looking for someone who can represent ALF’s ambitions through ideas, energy and the ability to maximize the work of a small staff in service to our senior fellows and our current class. The COO will be a partner in the re-imagining of the ALF class and senior fellow experiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES Organizational Leadership and Strategy • Represent the standards of excellence and service that ALF stands for. • Working with the CEO, build and ensure ongoing coordination and collaboration between staff members with an emphasis on sophistication and productivity. Lead with energy, innovation and an appreciation for continuity. • Exemplify an appreciation for the role of strategy in decision-making while constantly championing new tactics to meet ALF’s goals.

Board Partnership • Serve as the key liaison with the board and key committees in partnership with the CEO.

Financial stewardship • All aspects of CFO role (in collaboration with an accountant): budgeting, billing, banking, payroll, reports, with support from an outside bookkeeping firm.

Program Oversight • Be the staff leader on adoption of new technology and all current technology operations. • Working with the CEO, help oversee class-building, senior fellows activities, fundraising and communications.

External relations and network activation • Exemplify the professionalism and sophistication that ALF deserves — with a focus on engaging senior fellows in a range of current and to-be-imagined activities.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE Education • Undergraduate degree is preferred but not required. A graduate degree in a relevant field is a plus. Being an ALF Silicon Valley Senior Fellow is desired but not required.

Who you are • Outstanding organizational, communication/presentation and relationship building skills • A charismatic, courageous and credible leader with the ability to inspire across a wide range of points of view • Outstanding written communication skills • Strict attention to details and deadlines • Experience as an accounting and financial reporting lead • High integrity when dealing with a broad array of cultures and restricted and/or confidential information

Desirable qualifications • Fundraising experience • Marketing/communications experience

What you bring • Salesforce database experience • Accounting and financial reporting (CFO functions) • Demonstrated success as a project manager of time-limited and ongoing initiatives • At least five years of management experience

OUR CULTURE We encourage employees to actively participate in meaningful conversations about our strategic direction and how we best engage our 850+ person network for maximum impact. As a small team, we support each other in collaborative and flexible ways. We work to create an inclusive, cooperative and joyful working environment. All are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work! It is not necessary to meet all the criteria above to apply and be considered for this position.

COMPENSATION Total target compensation ranging from $125,000 to $140,000 which includes salary, bonuses, and other incentives commensurate with capabilities and experience. ALF Silicon Valley also offers a comprehensive benefits and Paid Time Off package.

Ideally, this professional resides in the Bay Area as they will be expected to be in community and available for casual contact in Silicon Valley as well as in the ALF Silicon Valley office several days a week.

About the Org

American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley (ALF Silicon Valley) is more than a leadership development organization—it is one of the region’s most impactful cross-sector networks of Bay Area executives. Its transformative Fellows Program convenes high level leaders and executives from business, government, and nonprofit/religious organizations from across the political and ideological spectrum. During this unique 12-month program, leaders explore their personal motivations and hone their leadership skills, while building enduring relationships that benefit personal growth, professional success, and often shape solutions for the region’s most difficult challenges.

Since 1989, ALF Silicon Valley has convened 45 “classes” of leaders in its year-long Fellows program by cultivating professional cohorts marked by trust, openness, and cross-sector communication – spanning sectors, industries, ideologies, and identities. ALF Silicon Valley creates space for authentic dialogue, growth, and relationships that have a track record of collective, innovative action on complex regional challenges. ALF Silicon Valley fosters community engagement, while remaining nonpartisan. We foster interactions and bonds between influential professionals who otherwise would not have a forum in which to connect.

After a year of deep self-exploration, animated discussion with class Fellows, and new perspective on their peers and the region, Fellows graduate to Senior Fellows status, joining a network of more than 850 leaders from multiple sectors. Senior Fellows remain connected and collaborate to tackle community challenges from multiple angles to build a stronger Bay Area region.

With a $1.9M budget, six staff members and a distinguished 25-member Board of Directors, ALF Silicon Valley is small but mighty.
