Development Officer
Job Description
The Development Officer plays a crucial role in securing financial resources and fostering relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners to advance the mission of Avenidas. In collaboration with the Vice President of Development, this position focuses on fundraising, donor relations, grant management, and event planning to ensure financial sustainability and growth. The Development Officer exercises independent judgment and discretion in executing responsibilities and ensures financial goals remain on track. Evening and weekend hours may be required.
Essential Job Functions
The Development Officer drives fundraising efforts, donor stewardship, grant management, and event planning to secure financial support for Avenidas. This role focuses on building relationships, identifying new funding opportunities, and engaging the community to advance the organization’s mission. Key responsibilities include:
Fundraising
Develop and execute fundraising strategies to meet annual revenue goals.
Identify and cultivate new funding sources, including individual donors, corporate
supporters, and foundations.
Lead, design, and execute annual campaign appeals.
Manage and grow a portfolio of major gift prospects, conducting research, cultivation,
solicitation, and stewardship activities.
Donor Relations
Build and maintain strong relationships with existing donors through regular engagement
and communication.
Create and implement donor recognition and appreciation programs.
Collaborate with the Development Associate to ensure accurate donor tracking and
interactions.
Support in activities related to Planned Giving.
Event Planning
Manage the execution of annual signature event, Avenidas Lifetimes of Achievement
Awards, in collaboration with the VP of Development, Marketing & Communications
team, and board members.
Assess the need for and coordinate additional fundraising or cultivation events.
Secure sponsorships and manage event budgets.
Partner with marketing teams to promote events and ensure successful outcomes.
Grant Management
Research and identify grant opportunities aligned with mission and programs.
Support the Vice President of Development in preparing, writing, and submitting grant
proposals and reports.
Maintain and manage an organization-wide grants tracking system.
Work with program leaders to coordinate grant funding requests and reports.
Community Engagement
Represent Avenidas at community events, networking functions, and meetings.
Develop partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and government entities.
Serve as an ambassador for Avenidas, promoting its mission and programs to the
broader community.
Secondary Job Functions
Participate in ongoing agency programs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in nonprofit management, communications,
business, or a related field.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, planned giving, and event
management.
Proven track record of successful fundraising and donor management.
Grant writing and management experience.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple priorities and
deadlines.
Proficiency in fundraising software and donor management systems – Raiser;s Edge
strongly preferred.
Passion for Avenidas' mission and a commitment to serving older adults.
Physical Demands, Work Environment, and Vision Requirements
Frequently stand, walk, sit, use a computer, and handle telephone communications.
Occasionally reach/work above shoulders, twist/bend/stoop/squat, lift/carry objects up to
10 pounds, and handle paperwork.
The role requires travel to donor meetings, sponsor sites, and community events.
Candidates must have a reliable and efficient mode of transportation to ensure timely
and effective participation in these engagements.
Work environment includes but not limited to office setting, community events, donor
engagements.
Evening and weekend hours may be required for special events, fundraising activities,
and donor engagements.
Hours & Total Compensation Overview
This is a full-time, exempt, 40-hour-per-week position. The annual salary range is $97,654 -$99,000.
